Preface

Dearest Daughter,

You are now in the safest place you can ever be in, inside of me – protected, deeply cherished and cared for. But soon you will make your entry into this world. Amma eagerly waits for the day, when your tiny eyes will widen with wonder at the sights this world has to offer you, its bright colors, its varied shapes and huge promises. Your innocence and purity will paint every object you see in bright and vivid shades. You will bask in the glow cast by the shimmer from these colors and dance in delight at the wonders of the world. It will be truly surreal to watch you grow as you learn the ways of the world.

However, slowly, these colors will start to lose their former splendor. Far from the protective nest of your home, as you step out, your naive mind will get exposed to the harsh dualities of the world. Suddenly everything might seem to appear black and white – the good and bad, the mighty and feeble, the powerful and weak, the kind and the cruel, so on and so forth. Your blood will boil seeing the dark shades, the injustice and the seeming unfairness in the world. Then as you grow older, these shades too will start to fade away. Black and white will smear on the canvas and create impressions of grey everywhere.

You will realize nothing is absolutely black or white. Shades of grey, some with brighter patches of white and some with darker patches of black. You will start to see imperfections in the people you thought were perfect, bright sides to unfortunate situations, innocent people being subjected to injustice and sometimes a tiny bit of compassion in the cruelest of minds. You will hardly be able to make sense of these paradoxes that the world shows you. Many questions will start troubling your guileless mind, many of them which have no convincing answers, many answers that you wish not to hear, unpleasant to the ear and some that you already know, but wish not to accept.

At this stage, Amma hopes that you never settle for anything but the truth – the Absolute Truth. May the fire to ask the right questions and get the right answers always burn inside you. When darkness creeps into your life, may you never live blissfully ignorant of it. Amma prays that you always seek out the Light of the Paramatman and glow in its effulgence, spreading light and happiness to everything that touches you. These letters that I write to you are humble offerings from Amma’s life – may they always guide you and be you eternal friend.

All my love forever,

Your Amma
